Red, Black and Gray

by Monica

The Monster looks down with flaming red eyes
I didn’t feel safe, but I fell for his lies

I know what he wants and I fall with shame
I have to let go because I can’t win his game

I see demons swarm around his filthy head
His mind is rotten and his black soul is dead

The wounds are seeping, my scars are bleeding
Locked in the pit while the Dragon is feeding

I hide my face so the Monster can’t see
I built the walls that won’t let me free

No one will mourn for the life he stole
No one will find me in this dirty hole

The world falls down, but the gray walls remain
And there they’ll stand till the Dragon is slain

Alone in this world with nowhere to go
There must be more, but this is all I know.

Hey Monica!

Thanks so much for sharing this with us!  I know it must have been hard to write that ~ it is painful!!  I relate so much to it!  Keep getting it out when you feel like it!  I love the way you expressed yourself ~ you are good!!!

I like your poems. I know why some of them are so dark. And I think I know what this one means. You have a wonderful talent. I hope that your nightmares have gone away.
I love you and miss you and I hope to see you this weekend when we come for a visit.

I'm not completely satisfied with this poem.  Any suggestions on how I can improve it would be helpful.

Here's the new version, please tell me what you think.

Red, Black, and Gray

by Monica

The Monster looks down with flaming red eyes
I was looking for love but I fell for the lies

I know what it wants and I fall with shame
I have to let go because I can’t win this game

The wounds are seeping, my scars are bleeding
Locked in the pit while the Dragon is feeding

Death gushes forth instead of new life
Breeding more lust, pain, anger and strife

I’m crushed by the weight of my own fear
It strangles my voice so that no one will hear

I hide my face so the Monster can’t see
I hide in the walls that won’t let me free

No one will mourn for the life it stole
No one will find me in this dirty hole

The world falls down, but the gray walls remain
And there they’ll stand till the Dragon is slain

A tortured soul with a horror-filled past,
Only God knows how long this can last

Alone in this dark world with nowhere to go
There must be more, but this is all I know.

Dear Monica ~

Wow. That version of your poem was even deeper! The rhythm of the second poem is great. You really did express what many of us feel. Thank you for continuing to share the beauty inside of you with us...no matter how painful it must surely be.

Monica,

I liked both poems, but I particularly liked the line in the second poem which said, "I was looking for love, but fell for the lies."  That is so true!  All we wanted was love from our abusers.

Your poetry describes my heart.  The walls, the shame, the fear of never being loved or accepted.  I'm glad you shared these words with us.  Please keep writing.

Thanks for sharing this Monica. It's so deep and honest ~ it gave me chills.  You are obviously very talented. I have such a hard time expessing myself that it amazes me how people can say so much with so few words. Thanks for sharing this!
Hugs,
