Title: Serotonin
Post by Monica on Feb 21st, 2006 at 12:04am
I'm a bit worried about posting this one.  It's full of metaphors and symbolism that might not make a bit of sense.  I can clarify stuff if you would like.  No, I was not drunk or high when I wrote this, it's just a little...difficult.  But I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Serotonin
by Monica Rodgers

The strawberry zombies with tears in their eyes
Whose smiles and laughter are sugar-sweet lies
Are living eternally dead to the world
With happy-faced dragons and tropical swirl

Wanting to die while still waiting to live
Nothing to hope for and nothing to give
Blissfully ignorant, so much to learn
But look on the inside and see how they burn

Why did they break?  Why did they fall?
First they were running; now they just crawl
Why do they scream?  Why do they hide?
And fall down like raindrops with shadows inside

They bury the truth like their anger and shame
Why care what they lose if it’s all just a game?
In the sweet-scented darkness there’s no chance to win
The razors of apathy peel off the skin

Shot through the heart with a plastic toy gun
They’re burning to death in the holiday sun
They’ve learned now that life has a sharp, jagged edge
Then follow the sirens’ calls straight off the ledge

Why do they hurt?  Why do they cry?
Nothing to live for and no place to die
Why did they run?  What do they fear?
And when they cry out why does nobody hear?

Hidden in storm clouds, emotionally blind
They’ll never know truth if they’ve frozen their minds
Entangled in rainbows, too broken to see
The one thing they need that can still set them free

They’re smiling on the outside; how long has it been fake?
They’re dead on the inside; is it possible to wake?
Just a few tortured souls running out of time
They don’t know why they’re searching and won’t like what they find

Why did they break?  Why did they fall?
First they were running; now they just crawl
Why do they scream?  Why do they hide?
And fall down like raindrops with shadows inside

Why do they hurt?  Why do they cry?
Nothing to live for and no place to die
Why can’t they run?  What do they fear?
And when they cry out why does nobody hear?

Monica,

What a powerful poem!  Wow!  I loved it.  So many images come to mind.  I'm glad you are able to write down your thoughts and feelings in this way.  Thanks for sharing.

WOW!
That's all I can think to say right now. Great job expressing this way, and believe it or not, I understood a lot of it.
Keep up the good work.
LOVE,
Chantell

Thanks everyone! ;D

At least I'm good for something.  Not much, but something.
